Ice Skating Downtown

Last year, when Mom and Dad visited us for Christmas, we stumbled on a downtown ice skating rink. That evening we took the boys skating for the first time. We really enjoyed this outing in the city and decided to try in again this year with Steve, Kim, and their girls. Caleb and Dallin remember it well and were able to get around pretty well on the ice. The little guys were not as sure on their feet. Mike and I took turns pushing them around the ice.

As I was skating around the rink with the little guys, Caleb asked me if I would like to dance with him in the center of the rink. The music was playing, there were other (much more skilled) skaters already dancing, and I knew if I tried I'd end up on my butt. However, I just couldn't resist Caleb's sweet request. We danced, very poorly, and I did end up on my butt. It was incredibly fun and very memorable. I love that boy.

While we all had fun, Ty spent the afternoon frustrated. He wanted to ice skate, but there weren't any his size. He wasn't allowed to run around the rink in his shoes or be carried by an adult skater so he was forced to sit back and watch the fun. As the youngest of four boys, this has become his challenge. He thinks he can keep up with the big bro's, but is often held back by his age/size. Kim snapped this photo at the end and although I shouldn't love it...I do.

A Snowy Day w/ Tyler

This morning it snowed and the cars were covered. As I headed out to clear the car before school this little guy wanted to join. We through on a hat and sweatshirt and he walked around eating snow till we were ready to go. Couldn't resist this picture (inspired by my sister). Therefore, we just wanted to give a shout out to little cuz L. J. Parry. Looking forward to snowboarding with you buddy:)

The other evening, I was juggling boys between their different activities (scouts, basketball, and a friends house). On the drive home, Caleb casually mentioned that on that very evening his class was having an open house to display their semester's writing samples. Somewhere in the back of my mind I remember reading a flier about this, but I never committed it to the calender and so it had slipped my mind. It was the last thing I wanted to do at that time. Boys were hungry, tired and still needing baths. I wanted to go home to relax. However, we were driving by the school and we could make the last fifteen minutes of the open house if we raced in. I decided to go for it and I am so glad. The class was assigned to write on a topic of their individual choices. Caleb chose to write about his family. I had to share. I love this boy!

Up Close at the ZOO

Recently, we were introduced to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo. We love it and bought a season pass so that we could enjoy going back a few times. One day, we went as a family and it seemed all the animals were out to play. Almost every exhibit allowed for up close interaction with the animals. It was a very memorable day.

Some animals got a little to close for comfort. The giraffes, for example tried to lick Blake in the face. Because of this, he was hesitant to feed them and a little nervous to get to close to the other animals. At lunch, Mike showed him there was nothing to be afraid of. He warmed up to the idea of feeding animals and ended up feeding crackers to the wildest one at the zoo that day:)

We rode the sky tram and were able to look at the zoo from a different perspective. The tram took us to the top of the mountain where there were amazing views. After eating our lunch at a picnic spot, we headed down the mountain to the remaining exhibits.

High five (or four) to the lion and gorilla.

The neatest exhibit for me that day was the one housing the bears. This one was napping on a rock when we showed up, but then he took a particular interest in the boys. At first, he appeared friendly and the boys were laughing and snuggling (through the glass).

Then a crowd started to gather and the bear began to snarl and swat at the boys with his sharp teeth and enormous paws. I don't know if he was being playful or angry, but it was a bit scary for me and we left him soon afterwards.

Happy Halloween

This Halloween we had fun coming up with costumes. The boys definitely had their opinions on the matter. Caleb created a joker get-up complete with checker pants, a funky tie, and home made hat. He wore it with pride and a huge joker smile. Dallin went for the skeleton costume. He thought it would be cool to glow in the dark.

Blake has had his costume idea for months. During our last move, he became well acquainted with The Karate Kid. Daniel-son is his new favorite character and "the crane" is his new favorite fighting move. Tyler, didn't really have a choice in the matter. This cow costume was a steal and the butt alone made it irresistible.

We joined a couple cute Care Bear cousins for neighborhood trick-or-treating and scored big on candy. The big boys ran ahead to ensure they hit the entire block while little guys hung back. Even Tyler caught on to the Trick- or-Treating concept, although he only seemed interested in approaching the door when the sucker in his hand ran out:)

We also were pleased to have discovered "Peter Pumpkin" again this year. Each year, we try to pick the right pumpkin out of the patch. If we're lucky, after carving him, we light him up and see if he talks. Peter knows our family well and it's always fun to have a conversation with him on Halloween night.

Family Reunion at the Lake House

One of the highlights of our summer was a week spent at a lake house in Mass. for the Swenson family reunion. It was so nice to see family again and to be able to visit in such a relaxing place.

While there, we attempted family photos. We were able to get a few, but our favorite was this one with Blakester running down the dock. He is so full of energy and entertains us constantly.

While we were at the lake, the boys spent a portion of every day fishing. They could have spent the entire time doing so, but fortunately we had some other activities planned. Some of the other highlights included: berry picking, sailing in Newport, visiting Boston, watching movies and eating good food. Already looking forward to the next reunion:)

Some good friends gave us tickets to the Rockies game and we had great time. The boys enjoyed eating sunflower seeds, cheering for the home team, and meeting up with old friends. . .

Coincidentally, we ran into our neighbors who had brought their boys to the game, as well. We were able to visit a while with them before we headed back to our seats. It was great to catch up ,

The Interest Fair

Caleb and Dallin attend a nearby Montessori Charter School and we love it. At the end of the school year they did a large project on one of their interests.

Caleb chose football and Dallin reported on our pet bearded dragon. Both did really well and were able to present their projects to their peers and parents.

These two cuties moved to town and have been spending some time with us. One day I asked them to be my models and they willingly agreed. They were adorable, super smilie, and so cooperative. These two were the stars of the day ... I loved it!

I loved watching this little monkey climb around like she was one of the big kids. She has so much spunk and energy I don't know how her mom keeps up.

Dallin is a crack up. He loves to clown around and he has the most contagious laugh. When he was almost three he broke his leg a playground. As a toddler, he was cautious and often nervous to try new things. These so he like to torment me by attempting all sorts of playground tricks. You'd think he'd have learned his lesson, but no:)

Happy Easter

We are lucky to live within 10 minutes of the Denver temple.
This Easter we spent the afternoon walking the temple grounds
and enjoying the gorgeous flowers.
It was extra special to have Kimberly and her
girls with us to enjoy the temple grounds.

Caleb and Dallin kept smelling to see if they could determine the
sweetest flower in the garden. They narrowed it down to a few,
but then the little guys joined in. Blake thought a few smelled
like peanut butter and jelly???

This year, as we watched General Conference, we encouraged the older two boys to take notes. We thought it was a good plan. Both Caleb and Dallin were attentive to Conference and quietly working away. However, in the end, the content of Dallin's notes were more humorous than spiritual in nature. We can't stop the kid from drawing. He's our little artist (Boyd K. Packer's my favorite).

BYU vs. Airforce

On September 11th we attended the BYU football game at the Airforce Academy. It was a gorgeous day and a fun game. The boys loved cheering for BYU, but enjoyed watching Airforce score. Each time they did, the cadets would run down on the field and do as many push-ups as their team had points. The jets flew over at the start of the game, music played throughout, and the halftime show was entertaining. What I enjoyed most, however, was watching the boys cheer and get into the game. Whenever the crowd went wild or the band played, the boys were up out of their seats joining in. It was great!

Tyler's Blessing

This last week we had Tyler's blessing at church and it was a very special event. He wore the same outfit as his brother, which was handmade by Grandma Hanchett. While I was dressing him Dallin was in the room getting ready for church. Dallin has lately become very aware of his style and likes to dress to impress. Also, he has been Tyler's most protective brother since birth. Our conversation went as follows...

Dal: "Why does Tyler have to dress like a girl when he goes to church?"
Me: "He's not dressed like a girl, this is a blessing outfit. In fact, it's the same one you wore when you were blessed in church."
Dal: "When did I start dressing like a boy?"
Me: "What do you mean?"
Dal: "When did I start wearing normal clothes?"
Me: "You only wear your blessing outfit on the day you are blessed."
Dal: "So he doesn't have to wear that ever again?"
Me: "No Dallin"
Dal: "Can I dress Tyler for church next week?"
Me: "Why, are you a little worried?"
Dal: Smiles...no comment!

The blessing was given by Michael and was beautiful.

Catching Crawfish With Cousins

One of our favorite things to do in the summer time is head to Castlewood Canyon in search of crawfish. We frequent this spot and have learn many tricks of the trade. This week we had cousins visiting and decided to venture out. It was a success! In all, we caught 60 crawfish and even took our adventures one step further by taking some home, cooking them up, and eating them.

A Mountain Retreat

We went on a little get-a-way with our good friends, the Berards. It was so nice to spend some time in the mountains exploring, fishing, playing games, and enjoying their company. The cabin we stayed at was within walking distance to this old gold mine. One afternoon we hiked to it. The boys were convinced if they looked hard enough they would find fortunes left behind. They did, indeed, find a few shimmering stones and filled their pockets full.

We also went fishing. Caleb caught the only fish of the day. I love how proud he is showing off his prized catch.

Blake would have been content throwing rocks in the stream that ran through the property. We spent hours one afternoon doing just that. In the end, Blake ended up taking a surprize dip.

A Trip to The Los Angeles Fire Dept.

Another highlight of our trip to California was our trip to the fire department where Uncle Steve works. He gave us the grand tour and VIP treatment. We were able to ride around town in the fire engine, run the sirens, honk the horns, climb in and explore the firetruck, spray the water hose, and even slide down the firefighters slide. It was a very fun and eventful evening. The boys couldn't get enough and haven't stopped talking about it since. Thanks again Uncle Steve!

In the station lot, the boys spotted a basketball hoop and started to play a little. I smile every time I look at the last picture of Blake shooting. He must have shot the ball 25+ times. Even after the older boys had called it quits, Blake continued to shoot. He didn't have bad form, but his height was restrictive. Even so, I truly believe he thought the ball would reach the hoop each time he shot it. Finally, when we were called in for dinner, I persuaded him to put the ball away. That boy defines determination and that photo defines him. I love it!

The boys thought the firefighter slide was the coolest. They tried it again and again with increased speed every time. The slide runs from the firefighters bedroom down to where the engines are kept so they can head out quickly. When this was explained to Caleb, he tried to convince me that getting ready for school would be much easier for him if I'd help install a similar slide system in our house. I told him maybe in the future, but for now the stairs will do.

A day at the beach

We had the most wonderful day at the beach. After arriving and walking around for a short period we came across a beach full of seals basking in the sun. The boys enjoyed watching the seals and birds for a while, but were soon ready to move on.

As we continued on our walk we noticed a crowd gathering and asked what they were looking at. It was a seal in labor. She was ready to deliver any minute. We waited, and watched, and ultimately witnessed the birth of this baby seal. It was amazing to see and definitely one of the highlights of our trip.

During our wait, I entertained myself by taking photos of my boys against the wall. They were not as entertained as I by this. However, they willingly participated for my sake. Witnessing the birth of a seal and the cooperation of my three boys for a photo shoot made for two miraculous events in one day.

Four For Four

We are excited to share our good news. Number #4 is a Boy! So for now, putting aside the idea of sugar and spice, we look forward to meeting our newest male addition. Among the different reactions to this news, our favorite was. . . "The only thing better then a family of three boys is a family of four". We couldn't agree more.

Steamboat Springs

Two of the things we like best about living in Colorado are living near family, and living near the mountains. This weekend we were able to enjoy both when we headed up to Steamboat Springs with the Adam, Mary, and the girls. We had a great time.

On Saturday, we took a hike to a frozen waterfall. The weather was perfect, it felt like we were walking through a winter wonderland. The hike took followed along side a river up into the canyon. It ended on a bridge that overlooked the waterfall. We continued on to the base of the falls where we were able to snap some photos.

Boys Basketball

The boys played basketball in a town rec league this winter and had so much fun. Michael was able to coach Dallin and both boys were able to play on teams with some of their good friend. It was a so much fun watching them learn the sport and grow throughout the season.

Caleb played on taller hoops, but liked to show-off his skills on the lower ones.

Blake's personal mission statement ... "Anything you can do I can do younger".

Our good friends came to cheer the boys on. At the end of the game, the girls thought Dal might appreciate a group hug ... he didn't.

A Day Spent With Puppies

Crazy Hair Day

Born with a personality to match the hair. I love it! I love him!

The boys had "crazy hair day" at school. Caleb, especially, is all about school spirit and was excited for the big day. However, he was concerned at bedtime the night before that his new hair cut would make it hard to express himself in an appropriately crazy way. There was talk at school of crazy spikes, tails, mohawks and other such coolness. How could he compete?

In the morning, I surprised Caleb with green hair spray bought on a late night trip to Wal-mart, Target, Rite Aid, and then finally Walgreens (which proved successful). He was so thrilled with the concept of color. Dallin and Blake were thrilled with the idea of being like their big bother so my entire crew went a little crazy.

After sending both Caleb and Dallin to school, I set out to run some errands with Blake. It took me a while to interpret the looks I was getting from fellow shoppers. I guess out of context, a one year old with green hair reflects questionably on the mother. At first, I felt the need to explain... then, I didn’t. I gained confidence in my decision to let Blake participate in “crazy hair day” as we passed by every mirror and window in the store. At his reflection, Blake would shout with excitement, “yook ma” and flash me an adorable Hanchett grin. Thus confirming "crazy hair day" can be just as important to a one year old as it is to his big brothers.

Caleb's Baptism

Today was a very special day for Caleb. He was baptized! We are so proud of him and grateful for his example. He is such an amazing kid. We love being his parents and watching him grow.

Blake enjoyed the baptism...especially the refreshments. When Caleb went into the font with Michael, Blake kept reaching for them and saying, "I want it, I want it." I'm pretty sure he thought they were swimming and wanted to join in.

An Evening at the Beach

This evening we went out for pizza at Grotto's and then walked along the beach for a while. We were dressed up and couldn't resist a mini photo shoot. After all... we are Swenson's.

The boys thought jumping off the life guard stand was as entertaining as it gets.

I enjoyed the band playing in the gazebo on the boardwalk. Blake and I danced a while and were joined by the rest. The evening ended with a little Rita's Italian Ice. It doesn't get much better then that.

Swenson Family Reunion

Great Advice

Caleb and Dallin have enjoyed playing soccer this spring. Both boys have done really well and have been on winning teams. Because of this, they often share their scores with pride and compete with each other on personal stats. It's been fun for me to watch and listen.

The other week, however, the boys played some difficult teams and were humbled a bit. Their teams were playing a neighboring community called Elk Ridge. This is a smaller community with fewer children. They have to combine their age groups in order to field teams so Caleb's 2nd grade team played their K-2nd and Dallin's 4-5 year old team played against their pre-K team. Caleb's team struggle, but ended up with a tie 2 - 2. Dallin was in the middle of his game, but getting increasingly frustrated by his failed attempts at scoring. At half time he wanted to go play at the park instead of finishing his game. I told him his team needed him and he'd have to finish his game before going to the park. He then sat down next to Caleb to take a drink. Their conversation went as follows:
Dallin: This team is way hard.
Caleb: Yeah.
Dallin: Their so fast.
Caleb: Last week was more fun. Did you know I scored three goals and my team scored thirteen?
Dallin: You told me already.
Caleb: We were doing so awesome my coach said we'd get a milk shake if we score just ten goals and we scored thirteen and so we got a milk shake.
Dallin: I KNOW!
(So at this point I'm thinking Dallin doesn't need to hear any more of Caleb's bragging about glory days and I'm about to intercept with some motivational advice when their conversation takes a turn).
Caleb: Last week we did really good, but did you know this week we almost got beaten by a bunch of kindergartners?
Dallin: Really?
Caleb: Yeah kindergartners.
Dallin: That stinks.
Caleb: Yeah, so sometimes you do your best and you score lots of goals and get a milkshake and sometimes when you are doing your best you almost get beat by kindergartners. You just gotta still try hard and do your best anyways. So good luck!
Dallin: Thanks
(Dallin runs off with renewed energy and goes on to score a goal that half).

Michael has been working hard in Colorado (and practicing a little guitar hero on the side) while the boys and I finish up the school year in Utah. Its been hard to be separated. We miss him. We love him. Tonight we thought we'd write to say hello.

Caleb says: "Dear Dad, I liked the picture of you in the wig playing Guitar Hero. When is next time we are going to see you? We'll try to call you this week so you don't tickle us. Yesterday I got 100% on my spelling test and my soccer team won. The score was 11 - 1. I scored three goals and my team scored the rest. I wish you could see me and I could see you. I am excited to go camping with you and fishing with you this summer. I love you.

Dallin says: "Dear Dad, I hope you have fun in Colorado. I hope we have fun there with you, too, when we move. Today I helped mom clean and jumped on the trampoline with Blake and Caleb. Blake thought it was funny to bounce. I love you. Oh yeah, I ate chocolate milk with my cereal ... you gotta try it. You just take Cinnamon Toast Crunch and you put chocolate milk in then take a bit. It sooo good. Also, I can catch the Yo-yo now. I'll show you next time. Mom says I need a hair cut tonight, I say no. What do you think? Call me tonight. I am at our house.

Lessons Learned

Today, I was unpacking from our spring break trip to Co. I asked Dallin to help me with the boys suitcase before playing with his friend. Blake was following us around. As I unloaded the boys suitcases, Dallin ran and put the items where they belonged. While we were in the boys room, Blake became interested in his big brothers toys and started wandering around pulling things out of their places.

My conversation with Dallin went as follows:

Dallin: BLAKE stop making messes when mom and I are trying to clean.

Blake: huh?

Mom: It's not a big deal, Dal!

Dallin: It's a big deal to me cause I'm the one haveTing to clean up after him.

Mom: I'll take care of it, let's leave him alone and focus on what we're doing.

A few minutes pass, Blake dumps the bucket of Lincoln Logs

Dallin: No, no, no, Blake.

Blake moves on to a Lego horse in the mouth

Dallin: Blaaaakkkeee deep breath pleeeeaaase stop!

Mom: Hey Dal, really don't worry about it.

Dallin: But there is slober all over my Lego mom.

Mom: Educational opp. Babies learn by getting into things. It's important for them to explore. They make messes because babies need to touch things, look at them, and sometimes even taste them in order to learn about them. Blake's just trying to discover what these big boy toys are all about. Let's just leave him be while we finish up here, Okay?

Dallin:No comment, slight nod.

A few minutes pass

Dallin: Mom?

Mom: Yes

Dallin: I understand how we need to learn to be smart and grow bigger ... but how come it is so important for babies to learn how to just make big messes and then five year olds need to learn to clean everything up?????????

Star of the Day - Part 2

On Saturday Blake turned 1 year old. We celebrated with some chocolate cake and ice cream. This year has gone by so fast I could hardly believe this little guys already one. Blake has been such a pleasant addition to our famliy. His big Hanchett grin and belly roll laugh keep us entertained.

At one year Blake...
*refers to food as na na (I think because he loves bananas). He will request it pleasantly at first, but quickly demand it(na na, na na, Na NA, NA NA, NAAAAA NAAAAA).
*loves to take baths. The other day, I was running a tub and doing my hair. Blake was standing at the side while the water filled up. I looked down when I heard a splash and saw that he had climbed in with all his clothes on. He was soaking wet and smiling.
*is beginning to walk. He has been timid up until now, but lately has been braving it on his own.
*enjoys wrestling and tickling. He'll jump in on the boys wrestling matches and crawl up to me requesting ickle, ickle:) Love it!
*refuses to cuddle. He is so active that cuddling with him is rare.
*adores his big brothers. When he's awake, he wants to be with them. Often when I go in to get him from his nap he is looking out the window at his brothers playing basketball or jumping on the trampoline. He also knows where their room is and will crawl to the door and wait for them there. It's awsome to see.

Star of the Day - Part 1

On Friday, Caleb had a school program in which he was excited to sing and give his part. It was a special treat to have his Aunt Sarah watching him. After the program, I was really proud when his teacher complimented him for a job well done. Especially, because she singled him out as being responsible and told me she had selected him to be in charge of the microphone and stool during the program because he is such a great helper in class. I really appreciate this quality in Caleb.

Caleb has been fortunate to find a few close friends at school. These guys all play on the same soccer team and live in our neighborhood. It's fun to watch them pal around together.

This week we had a great time with cousins. The Willis girls came for a visit and they were lots of fun. For their spring break, they decided to join us in snowy Utah. We took a few trips out in the snow, but had just as much fun indoors. On one morning we decided to make a slide using the boys beds. I don't know what was more enjoyable...the actual slide, or making funny faces for the camera.

The human train was a one shot experiment. There was little padding provided at the bottom and this train ended in a pile up.

We decided to take it one at a time instead.

P.S. At first I thought it wouldn't be nice to post this picture. Upon further thought, however, I decided it's just far to funny and needed to be shared. I especially love the look of pure delight on Mary's face. Good thing she's such a great sport.

The Aquarium

This Saturday we had a fun family day. The boys like to plan family outings as a reward for helping out and being good kids. This outing included a trip to the Aquarium, a dollar movie (Bedtime Stories), and dinner at their new favorite restaurant (an all you can eat Asian buffet). As a bonus, we were able to watch Aunt Dee play her final season basketball game on T.V. with Aunt Suz and Bri TAN y. It was action packed and fun:)

When we arrived at the aquarium there was a line wrapping around the building. We didn't realize the popularity of a new exhibit "Journey to South America". Fortunately, as members, we were able to sneak in for a sneak peak and avoid most of the crowds.

The boys favorite part is trying to touch the sting rays. Blake especially got into it this time, however, he enjoyed splashing more then anything.

The Best Valentines Day

This year I was reminded of the approaching holiday many times by Caleb. Since February 1st he has been insistent that we go to the store to purchase Valentines for his class. “You know mom, we need eighteen for the students and two for the teachers. Remember we need twenty valentines.” How could I forget when reminded so often? We did go to the store to purchase twenty Transformer valentines. I thought I had things covered until Dallin started in with his concerns. He asked, “Who is going to remember me for Valentines Day?”

I wanted to think of a way to make Valentine’s Day special for the boys. They knew it was approching, and I felt it was important to celebrate my love for them. In the end, my offering was simply this surprise heart attack with hidden valentine notes and some candy treats.

I attacked them late at night after returning home from work. Secretly, I posted my pre-cut hearts and arranged the treats around the room. When I was finished I walked back to my bedroom imagining their surprise in the morning. When I arrived at my door, I discovered I had been heart attacked as well. I fell asleep that night loving my family and feeling loved by them.

The next morning we laughed about our heart attacks and had a nice breakfast while watching Planet Earth. In the afternoon we decided to go swimming as a family. One of our neighbors has offered a standing invite for us to use their indoor pool. We decided that a family swim would be a fun Valentine’s treat. We really enjoyed swimming and playing ball at their pool. With no lifeguards on duty, however, I assumed the role myself. I encouraged the boys to wear life jackets, to take turns on the diving board/slide , and to walk slowly along the slippery surfaces.

I should have paid more attention to my own advice. Not long after we arrived, I was excited to show Blake a certain pool toy. I hurried toward the bin to get it. In doing so, I slipped onto my back side. It pained me to fall so hard on the concrete and to confirm once again that I am one who often falls far from the definition of grace. I was left with a giant bruise on my hip and a dent in my pride. I was embarrassed, but when I caught eyes with Michael his look communicated, “that wasn’t pretty, but I still think you are.” It definitely wasn’t a moment I was proud of, but it’s a moment that has brought me comfort since.

This Valentine’s Day I am grateful for the gift of knowing that I’m married to a man who loves me when I’ve got my best foot forward, as well as when I slip and fall on my butt. Also, I am grateful to have other family members and close friends with whom I share similar confidence. It's empowering to feel unconditionally loved. I hope that is what Dallin was feeling when he stomped up to me wearing his swim suit and snow boots to say, "This was the best Valentine's Day, don't you think mom?"

One of my favorite times of the day is the morning. After a good night sleep, the boys usually wake up happy and excited to tackle a new day. The other morning, however, was an exception. I found it quite entertaining and I thought I'd share...
Me: Morning buddy!
Dallin: I had a disaster night.
Me: I’m sorry… Did you have a bad dream?
Dallin: No! It’s just Caleb kept snoring and snoring all the time.
Me: Oh!
Dallin: I tried to get rid of him.
Me: Really!
Dallin: Yeah, first I closed his mouth. That didn’t work! Then I squeezed his nose. That didn’t even work! Then I just put my pillow over my head.
Me: Did that work?
Dallin: No. The only thing that worked was waking up.
Me: Well, good morning. I’m glad you’re awake.
Dallin: Ugh!
I guess it was just one of those days.

Snow! Lots of it!

Another day...more snow! I, for one, am ready for the snow to melt away. It appears Jack Frost has a different agenda. The other day, we awoke to a winter washout. Nearly two feet of snow had fallen all around. I thought ... "SNOW DAY" and had visions of curling up in front of a fire with hot chocolate and my family home from work and school. Moments later, however, I saw the school bus pass by. So instead of a cozy day, we threw on our gear and spent the morning shoveling. Caleb made it to school, Mike headed to work, and I went about my day as normal.

After school, Dallin burried himself in the snow and Caleb made Rudolph. Good times!

One of the Big Boys!

Today, I woke up to the sound of Blake talking in his crib. I went to get him, since we usually snuggle for some time before getting up for the day. This morning, however, he had a different agenda. After squirmming his way out of cuddling, he insisted on getting down off the bed onto the ground. Because I was still tired and looking to extend my morning slumber, I set him down to play. No sooner than I did, he was off. Within seconds, he had crawled out of my room, down the hall, through the kitchen, and to the basement door which leads to Caleb and Dallin's room. To ensure he didn't fall down the stairs, I jumped out of bed and ran to shut the basement door. What I didn't realize, was that in doing so, I had thwarted his plan. He looked up at me with pure disappointment on his face and then collapsed to the ground in tears. I tried many methods of distraction (toys, breakfast, and a bath), but none would do. Blake continued to return to the door and pound on it to let me known he wanted to go downstairs to see his brothers. When I finally took him to wake Caleb and Dallin, he was all grin through his tears. He went on to spend a good part of the morning following his brothers around while they prepared for the day. For me, it was a realization that this little guy is beginning to discover his own will. Also, it was just fun to see him so insistant on seeing his brothers first thing in the morning. Just a fun motherhood moment:)

Snow Filled Memories

Our neighbors, Ted and Dela, offered to share some of their toys with us this winter. Michael and Caleb have especially enjoyed snowmobiling on our property, while Dallin and I prefer the sledding with the radio flyer sleds. Over the holidays, we spent many afternoons taking advantage of the sunny winter days.

And we're off!

Dallin's solution to his chills was sharing a coat with Grandpa.

For a sledding hill, we blocked our driveway at the bottom and then held on for a ride to the top. Once everyone made it up the hill we took turns sledding .5 mile down hill, past the barn, and clear through till the driveway levels out. It's very cool.

After our first day out, Grandma and Grandpa decided the boys needed a Radio Flyer sled of their own. With great effort, they set out on a mission to find one. Eventually, they succeeded and it's a good thing because we put that sled to good use the rest of the time they were here.

A Day at Disneyland

This year we spent Thanksgiving in California with my sister Kimberly and her family. We had a great time. Since the weekend marked some big milestones for our family (Dallin's 5th birthday and our 10th wedding anniversary) we decided to spend a day at Disneyland. It turned out to be a great experience. This is a picture of Dal sportin' the birthday button that Aunt Kim picked up for him.

These two are great buddies. Both seem happy to be at the "Happiest Place on Earth"

Splash Mountain was a favorite for all. After our third time down, we decided to get creative. I love that Kim and Caleb made the exact same face.

After our first time down Splash Mountain Caleb had ducked for the great fall. When we hit the bottom he popped up and said, "I don't know why they call it Splash Mountain, I didn't even get wet." At that moment a wave splashed over the side of the log and smacked him in the face. The timing could not have been better. We laughed about it all day long.

Dallin wasn't sure what to think of this guy.

Jedi training was a hit. Both Caleb and Dallin were chosen from the crowd of screaming young Jedi's to practice with the master trainer. Caleb's eagerness to train was evident and consequently he was one of the first chosen. For some tense moments Dallin sat back with equal eagerness, but a little more reserve, waiting to see if he was going to be selected. The combined FORCE of Uncle Steve, Aunt Kim, and Mom's will, along with Dad throwing him up and down for visibility resulted in him being chosen next to last.

After training, the young Jedi's were able to test their new skills on the real bad guys. Caleb and Dallin both fought well and the Jedi's were victorious in the end. Caleb, however, informed us that it is much easier to defeat the dark side on Star Wars Lego video games then in real life.

While the older boys were busy defeating the dark side, Blake invested his efforts in defeating his cousin, Sienna, in a war over cheese puffs. Poor Sienna is an only child not accustom to the quick hands and cunning technique of a third child in an all boy family. Sorry baby girl!

Dallin, Blake and I went to the doctor for some immunization shots the other day. In an effort to prepare Dal for the experience I told him how important it was to be brave. I was going to explain it would hurt just a bit, but would keep him healthy in the long run. However, before I got the chance, he cut me off and said, "Mom, don't worry, I am not going to cry for these shots. I am going to smile so I can get them over with quickly." Great! This is going to be easier then I thought. We went in, were called back, and Dal was sitting in a chair next to the nurse when he said, "Wait, I thought you were talking about picture shots not needle shots ...ahhhhhhhhhhhh!" There went the smile and all attempts at bravery. This is a "shot" of him reenacting his initial reaction. I still keep thinking to myself, "Sorry Dallin."

Blake responded to the shots with even more drama. This picture was taken shortly after the tears had subsided, but if you look closely you can still see the tear (and snot) stained hoodie:(

Boys in Motion

One thing I've learned about raising boys is that they're always on the go. This week was an exciting one. Caleb had an idea to build a swing out of an old chair we found in the basement. We bought some rope, found a great tree out by the barn, and spent Saturday on our project. It was a great success, and as Caleb put it, "This swing ROCKS!”

In addition, Dallin decided it was time to remove the training wheels from his bike. He picked it up really fast. During Mike's lunch break from work, Dallin was off and riding. Go Dallin!

Fat Guy In A Little Tub

Blake loves bath time! Usually, in the evenings, I throw all three boys in the tub for a quick rinse down. This time was different. Our family had just finished taking family photos with a local photographer. The photo shoot was a success, but Blake was a bit chilled from being outside too long. Because of this, I wanted to give him a bath so that he could soak in some warmth. I envisioned my little newborn enjoying his bath in the sink like he did months ago. Instead, as I placed him in the water, it all overflowed onto the floor. I set him in the sink while I scrambled to clean all the water from the floor and counter space, and when I was finished I caught a glimpse of pure delight. Of course, I then had to call Mike in with the camera for another photo shoot.

Dallin Goes to School

While Caleb made the cut-off into Kindergarten by a month, Dallin missed it by the same amount. Although the boys are only two years and two months apart, Caleb will be in third grade before Dallin even starts Kindergarten. Dallin has expressed to me many times that he feels big enough and smart enough to be in school with Caleb (I understand his competitive nature because I am a second child too ... sorry Kim).

I was happy to discover a cute little preschool that is based out of Caleb's elementary school. The teachers are great, and Dallin was lucky to be one of the students chosen off the waiting list. Dallin attends Monday and Wednesday for a few hours. It's perfect for him, and he loves it.

With great excitement, Dallin described his first day of school to the family over dinner. On that particular day, he did a craft using silly string, played at the sand/water table, swung in the reading hammock, and built a fort with blocks. After hearing his activities described in detail, Caleb said, "You are so LUCKY. We just do learning things in my class." Since then, when Dal attends school, he comes home with a full report. "Today in my class we ate treats, drew pictures, sang songs, played outside, etc. Did your class do that Caleb?"

Lessons Learned in Granby

We were excited to spend some more time with the Parkins in a friends cabin up in Granby, CO. While there, we learned a few lessons:

1.) Never underestimate the potential for snow in August. To our surprize, this summer stay in the mountains turned out to be more like a cozy winter weekend. It even snowed for a short while. Fortunately, the cabin was loaded with hot chocolate, warm blankets, games, movies...

and, of course, there is always Dallin to keep us entertained.

2.) Dad is not the only one out there ... their are others who appear equally obsessed!

3.) Never judge a restaurant by the greatness of its chairs. While walking through the cute town of Granby, we were on the look out for a place to eat. I spotted this little restaurant and was inspired by the dining area. Although nobody else in town seemed to have found this place to be the gem I felt it was, I saw potential. Following my lead, everyone sat down to enjoy a meal. After searching for service, we ordered, we waited, we then waited more, we ate and $36.15 later we left feeling hungry and unsatisfied. Next time we'll know to follow the crowds and save the empty restaurants with the cool chairs for other unsuspecting tourists.

In the end, though, it was a treat. We really enjoyed our stay:)

The Parkins Visit

Some of our best friends came to visit for a weekend and we were excited to spend some time with them. Their family brings balance to ours with their three adorable girls. I, for one, welcome the purses, flowers, and hair ties that accompany our little guests. The boys, however, like the fact that these girls enjoy the horses, trampoline, and four wheeler just as much as they do. All in all, we had a great time with them.

Dallin is a crack up! He always likes to make us laugh. I was on the back of the boat snapping shots of theLake Powell setting when Dal came around the corner making this face. He said, "Don't you want to take a picture of this"? I most certainly did.

When they weren't swimming the boys were hunting for lizards. They caught four in all (three of which survived).

Dallin is so sweet with Blake. I love the quiet moments when I discover the boys doting over their new little brother.

I adore this outfit that Grandma bought for Blake. Everytime he wears it I see a slight similarity between Blake and the bulldog he's sporting. Something about his chubby cheeks and squinty little eyes. I'm not sure what it is, but it makes me laugh.

Downtown Carnival

While Dad and Mom were visiting we hit the downtown carnival for an evening of fun. The boys were treated to an unlimited park pass and took full advantage of it. They hit every ride possible and some multiple times. Before we knew it the rides were shutting down and we realized we were some of the last guests standing. Some might think it slightly irresponsible for a six and four year old to be up till closing time, but exceptions are made while Papa and Grandma are in town. We partied all night long!

The Fourth of July Parade

This year for the 4th of July we had a family reunion. With eight out of Michaels' family of ten siblings in town we were a crowd everywhere we went. It was so much fun! On the 4th we all woke up early and went to the Freedom Parade in Provo.

Curious George was a big hit.

Dallin was a fan.

During the not so entertaining portions of the parade, Caleb and his cousins discovered water bottles could serve as water fountains by poking a hole in the bottom. They took turns drinking in this fashion.

Thanks Aunt Britty for breakfast! Aunt Brit was the favored of the day when she showed up with donuts and treats for everyone.

I thought I'd capture a shot of everyone admiring the passing floats...instead I capture Adam admiring Mary. Who knows what Adam had to say, but Mary seems to be thoroughly enjoying the parade. Had to post this one.

What's in Snowville?

My best friend from junior high and highschool, Crystal, met up with me this week. She and her family were in Idaho for a wedding. Since she lives in the Boston area, it was a treat to have her venture out west. We agreed to meet up at a midpoint which happened to be Snowville, Utah (population 136). When asked "What is there to see in Snowville?" I replied with excitement... Crystal. We ate lunch at a local place and then enjoyed sitting under a shade tree at the park with our boys.

This little guy is Crystal's son Evan. He's as adorable as he looks.

These two are as spunkie as they look. I encouraged them to get some energy out on the tire swing secretly hoping they would wear themselves out and sleep for the three hour ride home (didn't work).

An Evening with the Hathaway Family

Some of our good friends came over to spend the evening with us. Mike and Dallin grilled up a good meal and we enjoyed visiting over dinner. After dinner, we decided to take a walk down to the barn on our property. On this walk, we discovered a not so welcome visitor. Despite my warnings to stay clear, Rich and Mike went on a mini hunt to catch it. Following their lead, everyone wanted a turn to hold the snake...that is everyone but me.

Backyard Fun!

Last night we set up a hammock in the yard. When we had finished, but before testing it out, Mike asked the boys if they knew the difference between a swing and a hammock. Caleb said, “A swing is fun and goes really high and a hammock is … well like a BIG swing”. Not quite Caleb! Mike explained a hammock is used for relaxing. This is his demonstration.

Blake loved rocking in the hammock. He and I relaxed while the rest of the family entertained us on the trampoline.

Dallin's turn!

This is Dallin showing of his Kung Fu moves. Last weekend we went on a family outing to see Kung Fu Panda. I don't know who appreciated it more, the boys or their parents. We laughed through it all and our family was quoting lines from the movie the rest of the evening. It's a must see. Needless to say, Kung Fu Panda is the newest super hero in our house.

A Visit From the Blackburns

Steve and Kimberly visited us last week along with cute little Sienna. We had such a good time hanging out with them. One of our outings was to Sundance where we rode the lifts and took a little hike.

After this shot was taken, Kimberly, Steve, and I were looking at it on the digital camera to see if it was a keeper. While determining if we looked good or not, Caleb decided the tulips in the background definitely did look good. So pretty, he thought, a bouquet of them would make his mom happy. With a dimple and a smile he handed about ten of them to me. Without further consult on our photo, we determined it was a keeper, left the flowers where they should have been for others to enjoy (the remaining hours they could be enjoyed) and went on to our next spot.
Caleb and Dallin have been such good buddies this summer. For the past few months, while Caleb was in school, Dallin would ask regularly when the bus was coming with Caleb. He was thrilled to find out that during the summer they get to spend all day, every day together.

We recently moved to Woodland Hills, Utah where folks are slow to get interenet and DHL drivers(with highly anticipated computer parts) are unable to locate. Now that those issues are resolved, I'm back online. As Michael put it "Oh no boys, we've lost mom for a while." I'll try to keep up to date because I have been getting critisized for having a fun in the snow post last until summer. Our new home is "little slice of heaven" as one friend put it. We love it...the boys especially. The setting is like a little Bed 'n Breakfast and we are aceptting reservations as of now.

Our driveway is a little bikeriders (and his mothers') dream.

Our barn is not functional, but Michael would like to raise chicks in it (no joke) and I like to imagine I am acting out my favorite childhood TV show Little House on the Prairie. Michael hates the show and doesn't like being called Charles.

One of my favorite parts about this place is that the deer and elk graze daily.

Fun in the snow at the cabin

This weekend we went up to our friends cabin. The weather was nice so we spent the afternoon playing outside in the snow. Afterwards we warmed up by the fire, had hot chocolate, and watched a movie. It was a perfect day!

Caleb and Jade teamed up to form the ultimate snowball. They kept tormenting Michael by tossing snow at him, but he showed them. It's not beneath him to wage a full-on snowball war with a couple six year olds.

This is my "best friend". I adore her because she always introduces me as her "best friend Joyce Hanchett" and when she greets me she'll say "Hello best friend" followed by a hug. She calls Michael, Caleb, Dallin by their first names, but insists on calling me Joyce Hanchett for some reason...I love it!

Christmas Eve with Cousins

This year we spent Christmas Eve with our Colorado family. After a great meal of ham and potatoes we sat down together for a little program.

On a side note...How cute is this little Santa?

Aunt Kathi conducted the chiming of Jingle Bells.

Everyone was able to participate, which resulted in some interesting renditions of of our favorite holiday songs.

Uncle Jon read us The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey. The story tells of a widowed woodcarver who rediscovers the meaning of Christmas.

Aunt Summer shared a story on the rippling effect a positive attitude can have.

Dallin and I cuddled on the couch. He likes to lay on my stomach and laughs whenever he feels his little brother kick him.

Our family shared the symbols of Christmas with a little gift swap.

The girls posed for a cute cousin shot while the Willis family shared a song and some of their family favorites of 2007. We really enjoyed this special evening with family and look forward to future family fun.
